Just like competitive sport, it takes much training, dedication, drive and sheer talent to successfully treat problem skin. And, with true Australian athleticism, our local skin therapists cleaned up at The Skin Games.
Celebrating outstanding techniques and results in the aesthetics industry, the international competition culminated with an awards ceremony at the San Ramon Marriott Hotel in California on the 8th of April 2017.
Choosing between the categories, ‘problem skin’, ‘age management’ or ‘hyperpigmentation’, 50 skin-therapists from all over the world worked tirelessly with one person for a period of 8 weeks to improve their skin condition. They were required to submit a 2 minute video, updating the judging panel on progress each week before the finals.
Skin professionals, Carmen Anuriw (The Skin Fairy) of Chelsea Skin Clinic in Nedlands WA and Brehanna Sanders of Just Magic in Mackay QLD, represented Australia.
Carmen, who dramatically improved her patients’ cystic acne, won the trophy for ‘Player Of The Year’ and first prize in the ‘Problematic Skin’ category, while Brehanna took home a ‘Game Changer’ award for her work with rosacea. She speaks to SPA+CLINIC about the accolade:
“I chose to enter with my work with a rosacea sufferer as, unlike acne or pigmentation, many people don’t know about it, and how it’s formed.
“I wanted to learn about it more myself, including the cell structure of a flare up, and what to do if you feel one coming on.
“About a month after sending a folio containing my case-study to the organisers in the U.S (that contained the 8 weeks of case-study footage) they emailed me telling me I’d been chosen for the next round.
“After arriving in LA, finalists were individually taken into a room with 5 judges representing their respective category who asked questions about the case study including what the PH of products used was, and what we’d do differently.
“To treat the condition, I used several modalities – IPL and needling, were complimented by strictly DMK products – since the improvement in her skin, my patient and I have become friends in real life – yes, it’s “Facebook offical”.
“We’re not just beauty therapists – I’ve changed her life on an emotional level – she doesn’t have to wear makeup anymore, she’s not self-consicious, she gets compliments on how good her skin looks…
“To me, it wasn’t about winning an award, it was purely to change someone’s life and make a difference for them.”
Both Australian winners utilised DMK Professional Skin Revision for their submissions.
“We are extremely proud of both Carmen and Brehanna”, says Debbie Dickson, head of education for DMK Australia and New Zealand.
“They showcased what truly wins out in the end, which is about systemically understanding a skin condition in order to correctly revise it.
“I have had the honour of knowing these women for the entirety of both their careers and their dedication to DMK and professional skin revision is unwavering, I am just so proud of each of what each of they achieved.”
