It’s no secret that stress and exhaustion manifest themselves on the skin and that a good bout of rest can help reverse these effects. However, you can still help your clients achieve that holiday glow even if they are not stepping on a plane this summer.
Dermalist’s AllSerum Skin Perfector contains the first active cosmeceutical ingredient that blocks cortisol production and releases calming neuropeptides in the skin, which gives it that holiday luminosity all year around. The ingredient is called Tephrosia Purpurea Seed Extract or Neurophroline, and it also helps to counteract the adverse effects of UV, infrared and blue light, and environmental stressors.
Neurophroline is derived from a native Indian plant, Tephrosia Purpurea or more commonly known as wild indigo, and has been used in Ayurvedic tradition for its skin benefits. A specific extraction from the seeds of this plant has been performed to obtain a condensate enriched in specific sugars including stachyose and ciceritol. This extract helps to break down cortisol production in the skin and activate the release of natural calming neuropeptide.
What is cortisol?
Not that you need a refresher course on this one given the past year, but stress is defined as any external factors that disrupt homeostasis, i.e. a stable internal state. Our bodies are flooded with stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol during stressful situations, and this dictates how the body responds. The body cannot remain in this state for prolonged periods of time. Therefore, we have a ‘reboot’ mechanism that returns the body to normal physiological conditions.
Skin cells also produce cortisol in response to external stress factors. However, in the case of prolonged exposure to stress like chemical aggressions, pollution, smoke, sleep deprivation and UV exposure, skin cells do not stop producing cortisol, unlike in the body. This results in the breakdown of homeostasis and leads to redness and a visibly tired look.
The results
Clinical trials have shown that Neurophroline found in Dermalist’s AllSerum Skin Perfector reduces skin stress and inflammation by up to 70 per cent within the first two hours of application. Within two weeks, it visibly reduces redness, increases skin luminosity by more than 57 per cent, and improves skin colour and tone by up to an astonishing 99 per cent. After one month of continuous use, there is a visible improvement in skin quality, texture and tone, with a less tired and more luminous look.
