For over 30 years Lisa has worked in, managed & owned salons – always generously sharing her knowledge with her clients and staff. Several years ago, when colleagues started asking her for advice about how to make their salons more profitable, Lisa took the opportunity to redirect her career into coaching. Founder of ZING, Author of The Naked Salon, Your Salon Team, Your Salon Retail and an inspirational Keynote speaker Lisa and her coaches are passionate about taking salons everywhere from “good to great.”
Tell us why you’re looking forward to speaking at BEAUTY & SPA Insiders
I think that if I can make people understand the value of FULL PRICE, FULL SERVICE— FULL STEAM AHEAD !!….. they can’t help but grow in their business. I don’t want people discounting because all it’s doing is ruining their success.
Tell us your daily routine in a nutshell
Well, I’m very conscious of my health so I always start the day with the first hour belonging to me…it could be yoga, going to the gym or walking the dog but those 3 combinations happen every single day without fail. Then I get into meetings …it could be meeting with a client or my team but there is always a structure around that. I also find time to work on my business…could be putting together a powerpoint presentation for my next event etc. and I aim to finish my day by 4.00pm. Sometimes that doesn’t work but mostly I’m done by 4.00pm as I have started around 6.00am.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love about my job is that what I’m teaching is ENDLESS and by endless I mean if I can teach somebody how to show their team members how to recommend retail there is no end to the success it will bring to their team. If I can show how to stop discounting, once that skill is learned there is no end to the reward you get ongoing from that.
3 items you never leave the house without?
Sunscreen on my face and décolletage.
Perfume on.
Wouldn’t leave without brushing my teeth!
Who has been your biggest supporter throughout your journey?
My coach. I have changed coaches a couple of times because I’ve needed different things from a coach but I would never, EVER have a business without a coach.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Retired. Well okay…semi-retired. I’m 55 now so by the time I’m 60 I would like to spend more time just creating content for the business. My plan is that in 5 years the business will have 30 coaches across Australia and overseas and be running without me.
Tell us a key learning you would pass on to other budding beauty entrepreneurs?
Learn the business side. Learn where the money is made and learn where the money goes. Once you truly learn your numbers it will set you free.
What is your top tip for separating business and pleasure?
Boundaries. You must have boundaries. There must be times where you switch off your phone. There must be a time you DON’T start work before. I don’t personally start work until 9.00am because I like to exercise and I need time off. I also think you need to be having a lot more breaks than you do and more critical thinking time.
Any hobbies outside of work?
My main hobby is looking after myself health and fitness wise. I also love to cook healthy food so sourcing, preparing and cooking takes a bit of my time but I love it.
If you were a shoe, what kind would you be?
I’m a workboot for sure. I love work. I’d be a steel capped Blundstone.
Your greatest achievement to date?
I’d have to say I have a top 2 greatest achievement so far which are both around the lives I have changed. To have a young mum spend more time with her children and have her salon making money for her. And that happens on a day to day basis for me.
Also my books which are mailed out every day to people I will never meet or ever speak to and they are reading and learning the business smarts I teach in those 3 books and changing their lives.
Getting people to understand that there is WAY more in the tank…. that they have far more money that they could be making and that they can have a business and a life.
