This UK Course Is Educating Spa Owners On Trans Bodies

The course covers everything from correct pronouns to inclusive marketing and treatment adjustments.

A new trans-awareness course has been launched for the spa sector in the UK to help spa staff learn to accommodate, attract and support transgender clients.

“Trans Awareness for Spas” was created by trans awareness educator and salon owner Sam Marshall alongside non-binary barber and founder of Hair Has No Gender, Keri Blue in response to the growing awareness around diversity training and their own personal discoveries that the majority of transgender people do not feel comfortable when visiting a spa.

Along with providing education for spa teams on transgender bodies, using the correct titles and pronouns, and how to manage dysphoria during treatment, the course also covers:

  • Treatment modifications
  • Inclusive marketing tips
  • Managing temporary non-surgical alterations (including as wigs and binders)
  • De-gendering services
  • Understanding the needs and expectations of non-binary clients

The programme has been certified by the UK’s Hair and body industry authority (Habia), and has already received endorsement from major players in the UK beauty and aesthetics industry. “Every hair and beauty brand, business owner and practitioner should complete the trans awareness training and ensure they are educated to represent, respect, and welcome everyone that they serve – not only their customers, but also their colleagues and peers in an inclusive way,” says chief operating officer at the British Beauty Council Helena Grzesk.

Trans Awareness for Spas costs £197 (AUD $370) per person and will be hosted through Zoom or conducted in-house at spas across the UK. Spa and clinic owners and staff are encouraged to sign up by contacting Marshall at sam@thebeautyguru.me. As the course is conducted online, participants my sign up from anywhere in the world.

Marshall also has a a similar course designed for salons called Introduction to Trans Awareness for Hair, Nails and Beauty, which she started in 2020. The training covers common mistakes people make when working with transgender clients and staff and how to implement a diverse and trans-aware business and marketing strategy to help business thrive. This online introductory course costs £97 (AUD $182).
