New Style For Cancer Initiative Up-skills Practitioners To Cater Services To Cancer Patients

Look Good Feel Better helps connect a community of people living a shared experience; empowering them to regain control, confidence, and a sense of self.

On August 1, 2024, Look Good Feel Better Australia introduced their latest initiative, ‘Style For Cancer,’ aimed at uniting the beauty, grooming, and styling industry for a greater cause.

This initiative will help raise vital funds for the Look Good Feel Better program and provide service providers with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and position as a crucial support system for individuals undergoing cancer treatment.

‘Style For Cancer’ caters to both consumers, referred to as ‘Style Seekers,’ and experts, known as ‘Style Makers.’

Style Makers participating in the initiative will receive comprehensive materials to better understand the common side effects of cancer treatment. They will also get guidance on sensitive communication to support their clients compassionately. Additionally, Style Makers will receive promotional materials for their business and a listing in an online directory.

This directory will be accessible to all Style Seekers, allowing them to select salons and service providers who are equipped with a deeper understanding of their experiences during cancer treatment. This initiative also reassures clients that their chosen business supports the impactful work of the Look Good Feel Better program.

Empowering through knowledge and fundraising

Style Makers can register for a tax-deductible donation of $89 and are encouraged to participate in additional fundraising activities throughout August. Carol Kavurma, General Manager of Look Good Feel Better, expresses her enthusiasm for the ‘Style For Cancer’ initiative, highlighting its potential to empower the industry and connect more deeply with local communities.

“With 34 years of incredible knowledge behind us, we recognised an opportunity to make salon appointments less daunting and more comfortable for those undergoing life-altering treatments,” said Carol. “Everyone deserves to feel uplifted after a trip to the hairdresser, nail salon, or makeup chair. The ‘Style For Cancer’ initiative will help service providers share in that excitement and confidence when working with their clients.”

Jodie Strong, a Look Good Feel Better program participant and Style Seeker, shares her perspective on the importance of this initiative. “During my treatment, especially chemo, I lacked the confidence to book any services. While most service providers were sensitive and careful, I often had to guide them on what worked best for my recovery. This initiative addresses the lack of awareness in the industry, making recovery more comfortable for patients both during and post-treatment.”

Michael Kelly, Founder and Creative Director at Salon HER, emphasises the need for improved communication and empathy within the industry. “Not everyone has the resources to hold space for someone in a vulnerable stage of their life. ‘Style For Cancer’ is a cause close to my heart, having lost and supported family members and clients through their cancer journeys.”

Year-round support and fundraising

While fundraising activities for ‘Style For Cancer’ will take place in participating businesses across Australia during August, the Style Maker directory and registration are available year-round. Every $100 raised through the initiative allows one participant to benefit from the Look Good Feel Better program, free of charge.
