COMO Shambhala Launches Sleep Awakening Workshop

Just in time for World Sleep Day on 16th March, the renowned COMO Shambhala Estate has announced the new Sleep Awakening Workshop led by Australian sleep consultant Tristian Kelly.

Held 17th – 22nd May 2018, this holistic workshop will help guests to take control of their sleeping patterns, explore how food and nutrition can affect sleep and how sleep affects your health, and engage in a range of body treatments, yoga and outdoor activities set amongst the tranquil Balinese jungle.

Tristian Kelly is a sleep therapist and author, with a wealth of experience having spent 20 years searching for a cure to her own chronic insomnia. Graduating in Psychology from Sydney University, she has trained as a naturopath, nutritionist, Western herbal medicine practitioner and homeopath. She now helps others achieve a sound sleep from her clinic ‘Counting Seashells’ in Paddington NSW.

Tristian spoke with SPA+CLINIC on what to expect at Sleep Awakening.

Will this workshop cure guest’s insomnia?
Yes, it will help the guests learn the cause of their insomnia and what they need to do to fix it. The cause of insomnia varies from person to person and that is why our workshop is designed in such a way that a guest will be able to delve into their individual situation and discover what’s keeping them awake.

What can guests expect?
Two 90-minute sessions a day that look at insomnia from every angle including food, lifestyle factors, relaxation techniques, work/life balance, and how to manage insomnia. One of the great things about the workshop is how the guests will get to share their experiences with people who truly understand what they are going through, so they will in turn have their own support network outside of the workshop.

How will this experience differ from sessions at your clinic in Paddington?
The main difference will be a dedicated 5 days to really get to the bottom of guests’ insomnia away from the demands of daily life. One great benefit will be sharing stories with other people going through similar issues – Insomnia is often something that’s hard to talk about and share with other people as many people downplay the effect it has on one’s life. The peaceful surroundings, nutritious food and access to spa treatments, pilates, yoga and hydrotherapy pools to name just a few, are incredibly important as they will help create a nurturing space to take on board workshop material, and will help speed up the recovery.

Why COMO Shambhala?
The accommodation is out of this world, the food is conducive to sleep and wellbeing, the surrounds are perfect to create a feeling of relaxation and inner peace, the facilities provide all amenities such as yoga and massage to help enhance the workshop contents. COMO Shambala is synonymous with luxury wellness holidays and retreat for change.

What were your key learnings when curing your own insomnia?

  • To have confidence there is light at the end of the tunnel and I will be able to sleep well again
  • Don’t move to a noisy road and expect to sleep well
  • If you drink more than a couple of drinks your sleep will usually be affected
  • Saying no to going out is ok
  • Don’t overeat at night, particularly much past 7.30pm
  • Do more of the things you love and less of the things you don’t
  • Food is medicine

Best tip for those experiencing sleep deprivation?

Understanding how to use light to your advantage and how you can reset your body clock simply by using the sun. Wake up same time each day, preferably early morning and then get outside into the early morning sunlight. That will help ensure that you are sleepy at night – and to stay sleepy you need to avoid light at night!
