Here’s Why These 2 Australians Opened Their Own International Spa In Bali

Introducing Mello Spa Bali – Seminyak’s newest luxury contemporary spa experience has arrived to the island. Our Online Editor Taneesa shares her treatment experience.

Welcome to the world of Mello, a newly opened spa oasis where self-care meets contemporary luxury in Seminyak, Bali. Founded by Australian entrepreneurs Mumtaz and Fatima Khan, Mello offers a curated blend of indulgence and results-driven treatments, set within a meticulously designed environment.

Over frequent visits to Bali, spanning over a decade, founders Mumtaz and Fatima recognised a gap in the Balinese Day Spa industry – a disconnect between industry standard, effective treatments and what luxury means to people.

“At Mello, we believe that true luxury lies in personalisation. Each treatment begins with an in-depth consultation, ensuring that every facial, massage, and wellness ritual is tailored to your unique needs and desires.”

Fatima Khan, Co-Founder of Mello Spa

Their treatments feature renowned cosmeceutical brands chosen for their efficacy and natural formulations sourced from Europe, USA, Australia and Indonesia; making their range of products one of the biggest of any spa on the island. From Oxygen Facials and LED Therapy using equipment from world trusted brands, to Signature Body Massages that are designed to combat the effects of travel and the tropical climate, delivering the best transformative experiences you can find in Bali.

An in-house standard called the “Mello Way” forms the foundation inside the walls of Mello. This includes stringent hygiene and product practices, taught by co-founder Mumtaz, who works in the Australian medical field as an Anaesthetist, to ensure all standards are maintained at an A-Grade medical level, which they believe is the best in the Balinese Day Spa industry.

Designed by internationally acclaimed architects and interior designers Samma Studio, alongside furniture designers The Medium, Mello creates an immersive experience where clients can personalise their environment with custom playlists, temperature-controlled beds, and soothing lighting.

This meticulous attention to detail helps craft the perfect “Mello Moment,” allowing you to discover your own interpretation of Mello. Indulgence and self-care hold unique meanings for every individual, and Mello embraces this uniqueness to deliver truly tailored experiences.

Beyond offering luxury treatments, Mello is deeply committed to empowering the local community. The Mello Foundation provides comprehensive training programs for Balinese women, equipping them with valuable skills and fostering greater autonomy. This initiative enriches their service, ensuring that every visit to Mello supports the well-being of both their clients and the community within which Mello is based.

All of the products used at Mello are curated and sourced from Indonesia, Australia, Europe and further reaches of the globe, with both pregnancy and IVF safe treatment options.

The treatment experience

Taneesa: I experienced both a Reflexology treatment and customised LED treatment, which were both performed at the same time. Initially, an in-depth consultation form was given to complete, which other spas in Bali typically do not offer. The consultation form screened for contraindications, but also enabled me to choose what type of sensory experience I preferred, even for a ‘shorter’ treatment, which gave a premium touch to the service.

I could select from 3 of their ‘Mello Mood’ playlists on the form, which from just reading the playlist name I knew which one I would like (you can also listen to their playlists at home on Spotify, which they have linked on their social media).

One interesting point was also, if I preferred ‘some talking’, or ‘a quiet treatment’. This made the treatment so much more relaxing even though I was still open to my therapist chatting to me.

The treatment room had beautiful ambient lighting that set the tone for the treatment, and then my therapists (yes, I had 2!) explained the treatment I was going to have. They discussed my skin concerns with me and selected serums of preference, with a selection of a blue LED treatment. As for my Reflexology treatment – this is not for the weak!

My final thoughts? Australia needs to lift their game at customer service! 100% would visit again.
